Terms of use
The deal, in plain terms
unikeys is free, has no account, and is provided as-is. It edits config files that belong to you, on a machine that belongs to you. These terms say what you can expect from it, and what it expects from you.

1. Agreement
By downloading, installing, or using unikeys (the "app"), or by using this website, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use them. unikeys is made by an individual developer, ronka ("we", "us"), not by a company.
2. What unikeys is
unikeys shows the keyboard shortcuts of the editors and terminals you have installed in one table, lets you align them, and writes the result back into each app's own config file. It is a local tool: no account, no server, no sync. See the privacy page for exactly what data is involved.
3. What it costs
Nothing. unikeys is free to download and use, on as many of your own Macs as you like. There is no trial, no subscription, and no payment of any kind — which also means there is no paid support obligation, and no service level to promise you.
4. It writes to your files — your part of the bargain
This is the part that matters most. unikeys modifies real config files belonging to
other applications. It is built to be careful about it: every pending change is listed
before it saves, each file is copied into
~/Library/Application Support/unikeys/backups before the first write of a
session, and a save can be reverted from those backups. But careful is not the same as
infallible.
By using unikeys, you accept that:
- You review the pending changes before you save. The list exists to be read, not clicked past.
- You are responsible for your own backups. unikeys' backups are a convenience, not a backup system. Keep your configs in version control or Time Machine, as you would anyway.
- Config formats change. The apps unikeys writes to are updated by other people on their own schedule. A format change can make a write wrong in a way unikeys cannot anticipate.
- Some app fixtures are authored rather than captured from a real install, and are therefore likelier to be inaccurate. Which is which is documented in the project README; read it before your first save.
If a write goes wrong, tell us — open an issue at github.com/ronka/unikeys/issues. A reproducible report is the fastest way a bad fixture gets fixed for everyone.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use unikeys to modify files on a machine, or belonging to a person, you are not authorised to modify.
- Distribute a modified build of unikeys under the unikeys name or icon, in a way that implies it is the original.
- Use unikeys where its failure could cause harm to people, property, or systems.
6. Source code and intellectual property
The unikeys source is published at github.com/ronka/unikeys. Whatever licence terms that repository states govern the source code; these terms do not grant you any additional rights in it. Being able to read the code is not, on its own, permission to redistribute or relicense it.
The unikeys name, icon, and this website's design remain ours. All other product names are the property of their owners.
7. No affiliation with the apps it supports
unikeys is an independent tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Microsoft, Anysphere, Amazon, Google, Zed Industries, JetBrains, Warp, Obsidian, Apple, or the maintainers of Ghostty, cmux, or iTerm2. Product names — VS Code, Cursor, Kiro, Antigravity, Zed, WebStorm, IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, Ghostty, cmux, iTerm2, Warp, Obsidian — are used only to say which apps unikeys can read and write, and belong to their respective owners.
8. No warranty
unikeys and this website are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will write every config file correctly.
9. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, configuration, or time, arising out of your use of unikeys — including a config file that is damaged or lost. Since unikeys is provided free of charge, our total liability to you for any claim is limited to zero.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or liabilities, so parts of sections 8 and 9 may not apply to you. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
10. Availability and changes
unikeys is developed in spare time. We may change, suspend, or discontinue it — or any part of this website — at any time, without notice and without obligation to provide updates or continued support. Builds already downloaded keep working; nothing here reaches into your machine to stop them.
11. Changes to these terms
These terms may be updated. The date at the top of the page moves when they are, and the change history is public in the repository. Continuing to use unikeys after a change means you accept the revised terms.
